  • The Vaal River Eastern Subsystem Augmentation Project (Vresap), considered one of the largest water augmentation schemes in South Africa’s recent history, has been used as a pilot model in an empowerment initiative by the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA), and the South Africa Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec) to promote the participation of women entrepreneurs in the construction industry, reports principal Vresap contractor Mpumalanga Pipeline Contractors Joint Venture (MPCJV).   • The eThekwini municipality is spending R850-million on replacing its old water pipes, especially the undipped ac mains, which have reached the end of their economic life, resulting in bursts that have inconvenienced consumers and damaged property. The municipality’s water and sanitation unit project executive, Alan Kee, says the bursts have also contributed to the high percentage of nonrevenue water currently being experienced.
